Motion text

Conference notes:

the major problem of youth unemployment and the lack of suitable training for young people seeking work
the coalition government is withdrawing the previous offer of a guaranteed apprenticeship for those with the right qualifications
many apprenticeships are narrowly focussed on the specific needs of their employer
increasingly release to FE Colleges does not form part of apprenticeship arrangements as employers are setting up their own training programmes with inferior pay and conditions for training staff and prioritising will result in fewer opportunities for women apprentices
apprentices are generally paid below the national minimum wage (employers are allowed to pay only £2. 50 an hour for those aged 19).
Conference demands:

a guaranteed place for all suitably qualified applicants for apprenticeships
minimum general standards to be set and monitored
the national minimum wage to be paid and for trade unions to negotiate higher wage levels
training and education to be partly based in Colleges to maintain standards
measures should be taken to avoid gender stereotyping in apprenticeships.
