- Motion text
There is a danger that union mergers can disenfranchise already marginalised groups of members, including black members. We cannot afford to be complacent about the work of our former unions in this field. Attacks on jobs, conditions and trade unionism in our workplaces have forced experienced black activists out of union activity. Without continual organising and development, UCU will not reach new black activists or address the long-held grievances of many black staff.
Congress demands:
an audit of black members, including their role in the union and level of membership;
an organising campaign led by the equality unit that builds strong regional networks of black members and supports new activists to take up roles in the union;
that UCU work with the TUC to host a forum for black activists across the movement to meet and discuss the current challenges of black trade union activism.
