Congress notes:
– the problems facing the military to recruit in the face of growing casualties and growing opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
– that college managements are inviting military recruiters onto university and FE campuses
– the prevalence of glamourised, violent role models and the glorification of weapons and war that the military help promote.
– the 'ethical shortcomings' in military recruitment practices detailed in the recent Rowntree Trust's report, 'Informed Choice'
-the decision made by NUT conference to support teachers opposing Ministry of Defence recruitment activities based on 'misleading propaganda' and to convene a 'summit of teachers and educationalists' alongside the Stop the War Coalition to consider the issue of military recruitment.Congress resolves to:
– support the building of campus Stop the war groups
– support opposition to military recruitment on campus
– agree to participate in protests opposing any military attack on Iran by the US and its allies
– UCU should approach the NUT, EIS and Stop the War Coalition to jointly organise the 'summit of teachers and educationalists' to discuss the issue of military recruitment.
