- Motion text
Congress notes DIUS policy on community cohesion. It welcomes the acknowledgement of the valuable work of F and HE, but believes the analysis of the reasons for potential violent extremism ignores its roots in racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia and the so called war on terror”, which can add to certain communities' feelings of isolation. Given the policy proposes new duties and action by colleges and universities, and their staff, effective implementation of these new duties will requires additional resources including time.
Congress therefore:
Calls on colleges and Universities to make the RRAA duty to promote good relations between different races the cornerstone of their response.
Opposes any attempt to get staff to spy on students or to restrict debate subject to the RRAA duty.
Welcomes the TES view that the Iraq invasion lies at the heart of community alienation.
Calls for continued work to challenge Islam phobia.
