The Save ESOL campaign has been a model of activism built around a broad coalition and widespread publicity for lobbies, protests, petitioning and public meetings.
Last year's Congress agreed to national action on ESOL and Adult Education, but the Campaigns have lost momentum, focusing on briefings and consultations.
Extra funding was allocated as a result of campaigns, but few jobs/provision were reinstated and money was allocated to 'employability'/marketisation agendas.
ESOL and Adult Education courses remain under threat of cuts and 'realignment' – to the further exclusion of marginalised groups not easily 'rationalised'.
Conference agrees to build on these campaigns:
to organise demonstrations and events to highlight the impact of cuts: narrowing participation, reducing service to the community, shelving equalities, and increasing costs to other local services;
and to reignite action to bring unions, students and community groups back together to call for reinstatement of provision not more cuts.
