HESC condemns cuts in cuts in public services, education funding and job losses. UCU serves notice on employers that existing staff cannot be expected to work harder or work unrecognized, unpaid overtime to make up the work left following redundancies.
HESC notes:
– the harmful impact of job losses on working conditions of remaining staff in universities and colleges;
– Anti-cuts campaigns should involve service users, students, parents and local communities.
HESC believes that cuts in education will have a discriminatory effect on women with regards to job losses, changes in conditions, increases in workloads, access to education and subjects taught, particularly women’s studies.
HESC condemns the huge cuts projected in public services and education funding. This includes approximately £1B worth of cuts, over the next three years, already announced with regards to the HE budget.
HESC resolves to:
– continue the work of building a public sector alliance to defend public services and jobs;
– call on all members to be vigilant in defending their conditions of service and reasonable workloads whilst at the same time fighting to defend jobs;
– call on branches and LAs to campaign vigorously around protecting reasonable workloads and reducing excessive workloads;
– demand all proposed redundancies be subject to impact assessment on the workloads of remaining staff, including the impact on professional effectiveness, quality of academic provision and staff well being.
